In the summer of 2024, Emily left her home in Arlington, Virginia, and joined VISIONS community service program for high school students in Urubamba, Peru. Drawn to the program by her passion for community service and sustainability, she immersed herself in meaningful work while improving her Spanish and connecting with our local friends.
From building irrigation canals to engaging in cultural activities like pottery and chocolate making, the experience not only deepened her appreciation for community-driven efforts but also solidified her future aspirations in environmental law and international service.
Below is our Q&A with Emily. Read on for more of what inspired her—and see some pictures of her experience in this wonderful summer Spanish immersion program!

What made you want to do a VISIONS program?
I wanted to participate in VISIONS because I wanted to make a difference in a community. I read and heard that VISIONS works directly with communities in Urubamba to build irrigation canals that directly improve the lives of the local people. I wanted to improve my Spanish speaking skills and connect with people in Peru.
Tell us about your experience.
I had a really wonderful experience with VISIONS! I felt that the work was very valuable and the connections I made were impactful. The leaders on the trip helped us feel connected to the work and the other teens in the program.

What was the service like and how did it resonate with you?
The service work required a good amount of physical labor. I loved building the canals and part of the elementary school because I could see the difference we were making. The work really resonated with me because I love environmental science and the canals improved the sustainability in this part of Peru.
Tell us about your favorite excursion or activity outside of work.
I loved our talleres (workshops)—especially pottery and chocolate making—because I got the opportunity to learn more about the culture and the jobs people have.
How has VISIONS propelled you to your future goals? Did the experience shift your perspective on where you want your life to go?
VISIONS helped me solidify my desire to study abroad in Latin America because I want to continue studying Spanish and helping remote communities in South America. I also want to continue improving sustainability by studying environmental law.

What does the word community mean to you?
The word community means a space and environment of people who feel connected and open to share their unique perspectives and opinions. I feel that VISIONS really embodied this definition and worked hard to create community during the program.
What do you feel is one of your greatest strengths that you have to offer the world?
One of my greatest strengths is my ability to connect with people. I think that my desire to communicate and form relationships will prove valuable because no matter where I go I am going to build relationships and make people feel seen.
