Q&A with Sufi, a 2025 Dominican Republic Alum

Finding Confidence and Connection during a VISIONS Summer

Anni, a VISIONS summer leader alum, with her husband and two children in Austin, TX

When & where did you work with VISIONS?

Dominican Republic July 2025

What made you want to do a program?

I wanted to experience a new culture and see more of the world as well as volunteer with kids.

Tell us about your VISIONS experience.

I had a really great time and I’m extremely happy that I did it. I learnt so much and met so many great people. It was an amazing experience and I am grateful to have been able to participate.

What was the service like and how did it resonate with you?

On my trip I got to see how another culture lives and that was incredible to be a part of. I keep thinking about the people I met on the trip. The service was very eye opening for me and I really appreciated every part of it.

Tell us about your favorite excursion or activity outside of work.

I really enjoyed the evenings with the local kids. It was so much fun to meet all these new people and hear them speak Spanish and I loved interacting with everyone.

Did VISIONS shift your perspective on where you want your life to go?

Yes I’ve always wanted to work with kids but this experience really showed me that it doesn’t need to be in an office and that I am capable of making a difference and engaging with new people.

What are you up to these days?

I’m in school right now but outside of that my new horse is taking up a lot of my free time. And I work in a grocery store to pay for the horse.

What does the word community mean to you?

For me a community is a group of people that feel like family. People that you can talk to about anything.

What is something that makes you hopeful for the future?

The community around me. I feel very well surrounded and I hope that everyone gets to experience that.

What do you feel is one of your greatest strengths that you have to offer the world?

I think I am very good at listening to people and understanding what they need.

In what ways, big or small, would you like to change the world?

I would like to make people appreciate it more. We don’t have other planets we can live on, so go see and experience what we do have.

What would you like to be remembered for?

I want to be remembered as someone who helped kids. I want to be a reason that children are happy in today’s society.

What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?

I hope I am travelling the world.

What would you like to say to other members of the VISIONS community?

Thank you to the whole program for letting me be part of such an amazing experience.
