Ashleigh Emery
Peru Director
1. What inspired you to join VISIONS?
I have always been interested in traveling, learning through cultural immersion, and working on projects that help others. Service is a very important part of life, and I believe we should all work together when we can to support our global community. VISIONS gives us this opportunity while allowing us to explore different cultures and countries and share our experiences with others.
2. What experiences have shaped your passion for community service and youth development?
I started traveling and living abroad at 18 years old when I went to work as an au pair in France. Since then, I’ve become enamored with learning about other cultures through my experiences—and living in as many different countries as possible.
For the past five years, I’ve been teaching English in countries around the world, working with people from 4 years old to 65, including spending a year in Peru. Nothing gives me more joy than helping someone learn something new and working together to achieve their goals.
3. What is your favorite achievement?
My favorite achievement is traveling to many countries and working and living in France, Thailand, and Peru. I love exploring the world and learning new things, and I hope to continue doing so throughout my life.
4. What is your favorite place you’ve traveled?
Cusco, Peru! I loved visiting Machu Picchu and learning about Quechuan culture and the history of the Incas. I also went hiking in the Andes Mountains, swam in hot springs, and explored the many museums in Cusco.
While I was there, I was lucky enough to experience Carnival—a festival celebrating the arrival of spring—where people throughout the city have water fights and throw shaving cream. I joined in and came back completely soaked!
5. What is the best advice you’ve received?
Chase your dreams and make the most of every opportunity.
6. What do you hope to accomplish this summer?
As my first summer as Director, I aim to help create a welcoming space where everyone has a great time, engages in cultural immersion, and learns a lot about Peruvian culture. I also hope to practice some Quechua (the indigenous language of Peru), as well as Spanish, of course.
7. What are you most excited about this summer?
I’m so excited to learn from the people in the community as well as from the people in our camp—and to visit the mysterious and beautiful Machu Picchu again!
8. If you had to give one piece of advice or words of encouragement to someone on their first VISIONS experience, what would it be?
Enjoy every second, learn as much as you can, and embrace everything that is new and different.
