Traveling with Friends—Experience the Power of Solo Travel

June 18, 2024
Travel programs for high school students often involve lots of friends adventuring together. But what if you went on your own?

Stepping into the unknown can be intimidating, especially without familiar faces by your side. However, this is a perfect opportunity for personal growth and authentic connections. Our travel programs for high school students are designed to welcome teens who arrive solo. Our emphasis on inclusivity invites kids to step out of their comfort zones and immerse themselves in an environment set up for fostering lifelong friendships and unforgettable experiences.

Solo Travel for Personal Growth and Connection

At VISIONS, we’re experienced travelers and have all had the wonderful opportunity to travel solo. There’s nothing like talking to a stranger in a market, or a neighbor, or a taxi driver—things that just don’t present themselves when you’re with friends. When you’re by yourself, you are much more open to experiencing new things, taking risks practicing another language, and going out on a limb. We want our participants to also have this experience but in the safest and best way possible. As such, we are immersed into a community of friends, as a group of solo travelers.

All this is to say, there’s a reason we don’t allow groups of three or more friends to attend a program together. By setting a limit of two friends per program, we encourage participants to engage with new experiences and people, forging lifelong bonds that go beyond pre-existing social circles.

Arriving solo also pushes kids towards expansive personal development. Without the immediate comfort of old friends, kids are encouraged to open themselves up to new perspectives and relationships—crucial for developing self-reliance, enhancing social skills, and gaining a deeper understanding of oneself and others.

From the moment they arrive at the airport and are welcomed by our leader team, participants find themselves in a supportive community where the seeds of friendship are planted and nurtured in a genuine and welcoming environment.

Inclusive Environments for Teen Volunteer Work

VISIONS programs dedicate time every day for teens to engage deeply with the local culture, environment, and each other.

One of the ways we do this is through Circle. This is an activity every other evening; a time that is specifically carved out of the day as a space for reflection on new experiences, community living and being tech-free. These interactions are structured to allow genuine connections for growth, providing a solid foundation for friendships that cross geographical, cultural, and social borders.

Enduring Friendships and Rich Experiences

The impact of a VISIONS adventure extends far beyond the duration of the program. Participants leave with not only incredible memories but with life-long friendships. These connections, formed in the unique context of collaborative service and shared discovery, are profound and enduring. They transcend the typical relationships formed in more familiar settings, offering a broader perspective on the world and one’s place within it. The power of this shared experience is undeniable.

It’s a chance to step into the world with open eyes and an open heart, ready to forge new paths and build lasting friendships. We welcome all teens to join us in the adventure, to come as they are, ready to explore, connect, and transform.
