daily life

A day at VISIONS looks like nothing else on your calendar.

Four days a week, you’ll choose a service project; another day is spent on homebase crew. Homebase crew days mean cooking breakfast, shopping at local markets for meals, and keeping our shared space running. Around 2 p.m. we shift to cultural and recreation activities, and weekends are for excursions. Evenings bring dinner guests, campfires, group meetings, and time to relax with friends. (*Read more about food and meals here.)

“My program was absolutely amazing. I was surrounded by incredible people 24/7, and that helped to show me the kind of person I want to be.”

Sierra O'Brien

A busy indoor market with colorful fruits and vegetables for sale. Several people shop and talk among the stalls, while vendors sit behind their produce. A group of young people stands together in the foreground.

The most physically and mentally rewarding summer I’ve experienced.

Alexandra Tatarski

cooperative community service

When it comes to determining community needs, local partners know best.

I have never had so much fun with such amazing individuals, completing projects that will benefit so many people.

Patrick Fleming

A young woman and a man pass a bucket of dirt between them, working outdoors with a group of people standing and watching in the background on a grassy area.

I loved seeing how much one small group of people can accomplish.

Lizzie Friedman

Cultural immersion

True immersion means the friendships you make are with local people, not just other participants.

I learned a lot by disconnecting from screentime and connecting to everything & everyone around me.

Jory Lindekugel

A young person wearing a red helmet and green shirt swings a bat at a ball during a baseball game on a dirt field, with other players and trees visible in the background under a clear sky.

I learned a lot by disconnecting from the outside world for four weeks.

Jory Lindekugel

adventurous exploration

From sacred ceremonies to Machu Picchu to mountain swimming holes—the excursions are as much a part of VISIONS as the work.

The adventure and excursions were definitely a favorite part of the program— I have never had the opportunity to do anything like this before!
Sanelma Heinonen

Four hikers with backpacks stand on a grassy field dotted with wildflowers, overlooking a scenic mountain range under a partly cloudy sky. Camping gear lies on the ground nearby.

It taught me that taking risks can lead to beautiful experiences and growth.

group dynamics

Healthy community building is at the heart of the VISIONS experience.

To foster inclusive group dynamics, we have unique standards that set us apart. Most teens come on their own, with no more than two friends attending a program together. Teamwork runs through everything—within your group and alongside community members—and true connections form through shared living and real work. Groups are large enough for diverse personalities, yet small enough to feel like family.

I had a wonderful experience that I know I will never forget and made friends that I will hope to keep forever.

Justin smith

A group of children and young adults stand in a circle outdoors near a wall with colorful murals and Spanish text, while one person speaks and others listen attentively. Trees and greenery are visible in the background.

The sense of camaraderie is something I will never forget.

Circle meetings

We “circle up” to share, reflect and grow together.

Group meetings create space to reflect on what you are experiencing and work through any challenges that naturally come with working closely with others. We encourage honest communication and self-awareness. You gain tools to influence the communities you belong to and the confidence to make thoughtful decisions that guide your life beyond the program.

I think that Circle is something that really sets VISIONS apart. It provided us with emotional outlets and got us to reflect on the work we were doing. I had the experience of a lifetime.
Adrien Rolet

Circle helped show me the person I want to be.

Leaders

VISIONS leaders keep our programs safe, fun and dynamic.

Our leaders typically include teachers, wilderness instructors and graduate students, selected through a competitive hiring process. About half return each season, which means continuity and experience you can count on. All are certified in First Aid and CPR, many hold advanced credentials, and the exceptional 1 to 4 or 5 ratio means every participant gets real attention.

Our leaders provided us with wonderful guidance and acted as role models, teachers, and friends.

Katie grossman

They worked beside us as peers and gained the respect they needed as leaders.
