Alaska community service projects completed in partnership with Tetlin Village Tribal Council, local community members and the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge.
- Constructed a 12-by-22-foot deck with safety railing and 6-foot-wide stairs at the back of Tetlin’s Tribal Hall:
- The deck, railing, and stairs were built with rough-sawn lumber treated with UV stain and sealant.
- Deck constructed with locally sourced spruce and fir; railings constructed with log poles, lag bolts and plate assemblies.
- Conducted invasive-weed removal with Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge at Moon Lake:
- Removed more than six trash bags full of invasive plans from this ecologically sensitive biome.
- Received extensive educational instruction from Wildlife Refuge contact, Tim.
- Replaced flooring for Tribal Elder Mena in her 175-square-foot living room and kitchen:
- Spent several hours organizing and cleaning the area.
- Removed several layers of existing flooring using scrapers and sanders.
- Removed and replaced a traditional wood stove.
- Laid laminate flooring over the entire area and included a HardieBacker protective layer underneath the wood stove.
- Built 14 book and clothing shelves for village community members:
- Utilized locally sourced spruce and fir.
- Each participant contributed design ideas for the Alaska community service projects.
- Conducted a two-day home-improvement project for Tribal Elder Yvon:
- Cleared trash from the grounds, cut back weeds, hauled a trailer to the landfill and beautified the landscape using hand tools, lawn mowers, rakes, and electric trimmers.Â
- Designed and built a large 7-by-5-foot A-frame structure for Tribal Elder Bernie’s six puppies (soon-to-be sled dogs):
- Used locally sourced lumber donated by Young’s Lumber Yard.
- All lumber used was hand-cut using traditional carpenter saws.
