Dominican Republic Leader

1. What inspired you to join VISIONS?

I started with VISIONS when I was 14 on a month-long trip to Nicaragua. After that first summer, I was hooked and spent the next three covered in concrete. Over those four years, I had the privilege of working with a number of incredible leaders who touched my life and facilitated truly life-changing experiences. Each of them inspired me to continue my journey with VISIONS in a whole new capacity. I am hopeful that I will have a similar impact on a new wave of participants.

2. What experiences have shaped your passion for community service and youth development?

I was always told that there are just a few decisions and uncontrollable factors that separate volunteers and the communities they serve. I believe it’s everyone’s responsibility to help limit that separation and to shape their communities in meaningful ways. I started with VISIONS because I felt I could ethically make a difference.

3. What is your favorite achievement?

I recently finished my Advanced Scuba Certification in Thailand, which gets me one step closer to my Divemaster certification!

4. What is your favorite place you’ve traveled?

This is by far the toughest question! Mexico and Colombia are tied for my favorite places I’ve ever traveled.

5. What is the best advice you’ve received?

My mom likes to remind me that “I don’t know everything.” As hard as it may be to accept that fact, doing so is the only way to learn and expand your way of thinking. Acknowledging that I don’t have all the answers has allowed me to actually get some—and become a more well-rounded person.

6. What do you hope to accomplish this summer?

This summer, I’d like to use my GoPro as much as possible and meet some truly great people!

7. What are you most excited about this summer?

I’m most excited to practice my Caribbean Spanish.

8. If you had to give one piece of advice or words of encouragement to someone on their first VISIONS experience, what would it be?

Build as many relationships as you can! The people in your group can become lifelong friends, and the locals you live with will help shape your experience. Don’t just be open to connection—forge it.
