What is Project Drawdown?

April 21, 2021
Project Drawdown plays a critical role in all of the myriad sustainability initiatives we’re working on at our Montana Farm & Ranch. At VISIONS, we’ve always followed environmental principles, from reducing waste to recycling to composting (often by giving food waste to local livestock).

Moving forward, however, we are also focusing many of our educational modules and projects specifically around the lessons of Project Drawdown, while still using the cultural and geographic region of the Rocky Mountains as a lens.

Drawdown is the future point in time when levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere stop climbing and start to steadily decline. This is the point when we begin the process of stopping further climate change and averting potentially catastrophic warming. It is a critical turning point for life on Earth.

-Project Drawdown

Project Drawdown focused on a variety of aspects of human life in the 21st century, including electricity, food, agriculture and land use, industry, health and education, various land, engineered, coastal and ocean sinks, transportation, buildings and more!

The Project Drawdown concept is composed of a variety of modules and partnerships to help humanity reach this point, including three specific connected areas that call for action. These are:

Reduce Sources — bringing emissions to zero
Support Sinks — uplifting nature’s carbon cycle
Improve Society — fostering equality for all
In addition, many of the top drawdown activities specifically relate to land use, food sourcing & waste, regenerative agriculture… you get the idea!

In short, these are all things that are a core part of what we do on the VISIONS Farm and Gap programs!

While the Montana farm & ranch will spearhead these initiatives, by no means are they exclusive to our VISIONS work at the farm. The environmental principles of Project Drawdown will be incorporated into all VISIONS programs as much as possible, including international locations like the British Virgin Islands and Dominican Republic.
