Born and raised in Southwest Idaho, Max Hewes grew up both in the booming capital city of Boise and the surrounding agricultural community.
As a young adult the whole whole country served as a classroom. Homesteading in the arid desert of Northern New Mexico, weathering storms and growing vegetables in Southern Louisiana, building community gardens for immigrant populations in Louisville, Kentucky, and operating a farm of his own in California were but a prelude to a passionate pursuit of sustainable forestry.
For the past six years Max was the owner and operator of his own mobile lumber mill and has worked as a logger and sawyer in California, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. Working in many forests and many family-run sawmill operations has instilled a sense of wonder and urgency. Max has a passion for educating about forest soils and systems, sharing his hopes for a more vibrant and diverse forest economy.
